This is our 2nd week of Unit 6.  The Focus and tested skills will be as follows:

o   Summarizing

o    Grammar, Usage and Mechanics

o   Adjectives that compare, Correct Comparative and superlatives

o   Spelling:  Two syllable long and Short vowel with “le” at the end

o   Writing Strategies: Descriptive

Math:  Topic 16 test (Customary Units of Measurement) We will also be reviewing a variety of math skills

 Science:   “Matter and Energy” study.

Language Arts: We will be taking part of the Theme 5 test.  The test will include the following

Vocabulary Strategies: Unfamiliar words, prefixes, homophones synonyms

Reading Comprehension: cause & effect,

main idea and details,                                                                 description                                                                                         compare and contrast                                                                making judgments.

Grammar Mechanics and Usage:  Pronoun-verb agreement,                                                                                                      capitalizing “I” and proper nouns,                                                                                               pronouns, contractions                                                                                                               possessive pronouns

Spelling: listed below

Writing: Focus will be on “Main Idea and Detail” within a personal narrative

Math:  Topic 20 We will be finishing up topic 20 on statistics and probability.  We will also be reviewing long division and other standards in which our students are lacking.

             Language Arts: Unit 5 Week 2: We will be reading “Animal Homes” and focus on the following:

  • Vocabulary strategies: Homophones
  • Reading Comprehension:  Description

Grammar Usage and Mechanics: Subject and Object pronouns and Prnoun usage

Writing Strategies:            Fictional narrative:  capitalization, and punctuation and adding detail

  • Spelling:  Inflectional endings
  • Math: We will be skipping Topics 16 & 17 because there are only 2 of these questions on the CST.  We will go on to Topic 18: Perimeter, Area and Volume.  There are 6 of these questions on the CST.  Please continue to practice time/tables with your child.  During the CST, they cannot use a time/table chart unless they made it that morning.

TESTING WEEK

This is our testing week.  We will be having our 2nd quarter math test as well as our Unit 3  test.  Both of these tests are cumulative.  All scores must be in by Friday January 18, 2013 so I will push the test back until I feel they are ready.  Homework is VERY important this week because it is very much like the actual test.  I plan to review at school, have them practice with homework, review again during homework correction and then test.  These test weigh more heavily than the regular weekly test, so please emphasize the importance at home.

We are still in Unit 3.  Each unit has 5 weeks and then a testing week.  We are on week 5 so next week is testing week..  This unit is “Express Yourself”.  It is about different ways that individuals express themselves.  Ideas in expressing ones’ self through art, writing, poetry, dance, dress, behavior, speech, etc., will be explored.

This week we will begin by reading "Coasting to California”. Please log into Treasures to read this story. Our focus and tested skills will be the following:

Math As per my e-mail, We will test onMonday since students asked for additional time to study.

Science: We tested on Friday.  Some did not finish and will get to finish Monday.  We will not begin another Science unit until next week.

Social Studies: We will continue our study on Native Americans

Art: Mrs. Drew has completed her time with us and will be moving on to another class.  Our Art time will be Friday afternoon.

 Spelling:  Words with silent letters

 Writing Strategies: Describing “emotions" by showing not telling

 Math  We will continue with Topic 5.  topic 5 focuses on geometry.  There is alot of new terminology in this chapter.  Please make sure your child studies.   Test is Wednesday

 Science:  We will be completing our unit on Sun, moon and Stars. Test is scheduled for Thursday.

 Social Studies:  We will continue our study on Native Americans

Art:  Students get a special treat.  They will be working with clay this week!!!  Yay!

We begin Unit 2 Today.  We will be studying new concepts as well as reinforcing some previous concepts for 5 weeks and then once again we will have a cumulative test on all of the unit 2 concepts.  This week we will begin by reading “Boom Town”. Please log into Treasures to read this story.  Our focus and tested skills  will be the following:

We did not take our math test Friday because we had several students absent and I wanted to give them more time to grasp the routine of subtracting, especially when there are several zeros on the top row.   We will test today. (Monday
